Religion takes advantage of the weaknesses of people.

Religion seeks and feeds on specific weaknesses and vulnerabilities of people. People who have a habit of trembling every time they hear certain words grow dependent on them. These people are addicted to that type of fear. Once an addiction to fear sets in, fear becomes the crutch. They will rather listen to what creates more fear than what dispels it.

Superstitious people are inherently afraid. Their imagination is a reality, and reason destroys it. Religion and their charlatans focus and feed on their active imagination with elaborate fables. This fear people have is temporarily soothed by non-tangible abstract religious solutions which come at a price. The more elaborate the church is, the more it is listened to and the amount spent to obtain those cures.

If religion was clear, it would have fewer attractions for the ignorant. They need obscurity, mysteries, fables, miracles, incredible things, which keep their brains perpetually at work. Romances, idle stories, tales of ghosts and witches, have more charms for the vulgar than true narrations. In the matter of religion, men are but overgrown children.

The more absurd a religion is, and the fuller of marvels, the more power it exerts; the devotee thinks himself obliged to place no limits to his credulity; the more inconceivable things are, the more divine they appear to him; the more incredible they are, the more merit he gives himself for believing them.
